Economic Meltdown
Where to now?
If our economy is in meltdown is it time for change? You bet it is.
Time to fix the economy and the environment. ‘cos they are the same thing…..
We all know – well those of us who are awake that is - that the only reason that the global economy keeps its head above water is through the fact that it is talked up in the mainstream media. But that may all be about to change. The historical warnings that things have not been going well have come true.
I mean I heard at least two years ago about the sub prime junk mortgages in the USA and the risks these held for global financial stability. Some denied that. Yet that chicken has come home to roost, as most have noticed.
But, you say, dear sceptic, “it all turned out okay, I mean the stock exchanges and all those things are headed up again.” Well, kind of. They did have to shut down the Indian bourse before it melted down last week. And now the BBC, no less, is telling us that a lot of other bourses may have a rocky week ahead. Hmm.
Of course oil is knocking at the US$90 dollar a barrel mark. Gold cracked the $650 margin that the experts said clear the way to 700 dollar an ounce gold. So why would gold fly if everything was as rosy as the pundits would tell us?
Maybe that things are not so rosy?
Well, that’s my take, at least.
Look, given the scenario we are in at the moment two things can happen. The economy can tank as the bubble of hype bursts. That’s the first scenario. End result will be pain for the rich, more pain for the middle classes and most pain for the poor as the rich become even more self centered and panicky that they are loosing their loot, than they usually are.
Second scenario is that the ecosystems crash because they can no longer prop up the economic lie we inhabit. This too is by all accounts happening already. If you don’t believe me go and see the 11th Hour movie with Leonardo de Caprio. Sure it’s not a great movie and the stuff it assails us with for the first half is stuff most of us know, or should know at least. But it does put things in a nice perspective on how we must change. And how we must change right now.
I share the conclusion that given all of the shit we face, we have to change. So at least Leonardo and I agree on that. As do many others. We have to change how we do buisness and we have to change how we care for the world. The two things are intimately connected. There are lots of places we can learn how to do this. I suggest here, here, here and here for starters. Those will lead you to a bunch of other places to build ways to make it all better.
And keep looking cos we certainly need to build the better world, together, now. And we can. Share the knowledge and share the networks so nobody remains ignorant. Even tell king george the thickheaded lost child. Naah, I take that back, he’s lost to Dickhead Cheesey. Poor dummy.
